Report of Meeting Thursday 29 November 12

The meeting started with a ring of the bell and the royal toast at 1:15pm.

Today the meeting was presided by the Vice President Jim Poh in the absence of President Leong Keng Mun who was away overseas.

Introduction of Guests

Mr. Dominic  Lawrence was introduced as the guest of PDG Leslie Salehuddin for the second time.

PP Steven Robbins & PP Graham Bennett were introduced as visiting Rotarians and the speakers of the day.

Announcements

PP Chandran invited members to present suitable candidates for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). This year the award would be held at Benong Hills, Raub, Pahang.

Hon. Secretary PP Yeo Soon Teck informed that there is a list going out to members, to vote on a change of meeting venue. Members are to respond before the deadline.

The President’s address

The acting President then addressed the club and announced in chronological order the upcoming events;

Saturday, 1 December 12, 6.30 pm onwards, the Club fellowship  Christmas/Thanksgiving Dinner  at 66 Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara.

Friday,  7, Saturday 8 & Sunday 9  December 12 – The District Conference that shall be held at the Sunway Resort, Subang Jaya.

Sunday 16 December 2012 – The Community Care Carnival, held at the Tropicana Medical Center, Kota Damansara.

Thursday,13  December 2012 – Club Annual General meeting

The Speaker spoke on Rotary Education Awards (REA) on the programme to sponsor financially and mentor suitable students in their education. To motivate and network with industry so that candidates have broader and positive outlook and find direction in their vocation/education. It was described as a win-win situation  as both the mentor and the candidates benefit from this programme.

PP Veiven Goon shared his experience from being a mentor and found satisfaction in seeing his candidate  grow to be a confidant and contributing person to society.

The Club vote on the District Governor nominees.

The meeting carried on with the club vote for the District Governor. The decision was to vote for PP Kirenjit Kaur by show of hands.

The meeting closed shortly after at 2.20pm.

Report of Meeting Thursday 22 November 12

The meeting started with the ring of the bell and the royal toast.

Today’s guests were the Past District Governor from Pakistan  - Usman Masud Khan, PP Susan Tu (from RC Cheras) and Mr. Dominic Lawrence ( a guest from PDG Centre Salehuddin).

There were announcements from Rtn. Lee Jia Peng on the Community Care Carnival that would be held on Sunday the 16^th of December 2012 at the Tropicana Medical Centre, Kota Damansara and VP Jim Poh on the Christmas Fellowship Dinner that would be held on Saturday 1 December 2012.

The President spoke on the upcoming District Conference and the voting of the new District Governor.

The speaker of the day was PP Susan Tu on The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and the giving by all members to this fund.

PDG Usman Masud Khan had some views on the presentation and suggested that illustrations on how a small contribution by members could go a long way to help the under-privilege under this fund.

The meeting ended shortly after.

Thursday 8 November 12 - Farewell Ntsebe

Rotary Club of Gombak                          Thursday 8 November 2012  

Today's meeting started as usual with the ring of the bell and the royal toast.

PDG Kok Beng announced the Mentoring programme by Rotary under the Bukit Kiara club and requested for support from members. There would be a training session this Sunday at the Subang Golf Club from 9am to 11am.

The President then encouraged all members to support the Community Care Carnival that will be held at the mezzanine level of the Tropicana Medical Centre, Kota Damansara this December.

PDG Leslie introduced our speaker for the day; Ms Hamza Valli Palaniappan. She spoke on Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and the seven principles behind the Act.

  

PP Chandran thanked the speaker.

Before the close of the meeting, IPP Joyce Lim was invited to the rostrum to say a few parting words, on behalf of the club to Rtn Ntsebe Kokome. She would be leaving the country the following day.

Rtn Ntsebe in returned thanked the club for all the love and warmth that was shown to her especially when she first arrived in KL. And reminded the club that they owed her a visit to the Kingdom of Lesotho. 

ROTARY CLUB OF GOMBAK OUTING @ KUALA KUBU BAHRU

 Saturday 3 November 2012

          We had wonderful time at Maycliff, KKB. The river was a few steps down from the lawn that we had parked at.

         

          It was a little cottage with a wide cement rendered verandah floor with lots of long tables and comfy chairs to ‘lepak’. Tucked in a corner was a Christmas in perpetuity tree. The verandah fronts the living room with day light shining down on to a piano. One can picture the many merry nights with song at that area.

          What attracted our eyes, especially for the men, when we first arrived, was not the beautiful bare top women (shoulder height) but the BBQ pit with a fire and timber logs  already in use. The smell of timber smoke, the sound of the swift river against the rocks, the mild sunshine and the sight of natural greens around were mesmerizing.

          Some of us immersed ourselves in the river, chilly initially but soon forgotten with the massage of river current, the loud breaking of water against the rocks. A great welcome from the earlier endless phone calls asking for directions, coordinating the journey to Maycliff. After an hour of this, the BBQ was served.

An endless flow of food, sausages, chicken wings, lamb chops, salad, sweet potatoes, corn and fish finished with some fine Irish coffee.

          Everyone was charmed by the place. There were suggestions to hold fire side meetings at this place. A retreat for our club planning..etc.

          All good things have to come to an end. By 4:30 pm we got ourselves ready to return back to the urban environment.

          It was an excellent trip all thanks to our President Keng Mun for organizing it!!!

Report of Meeting Thursday 1 November 12

          Today’s meeting was unusually large with almost three tables filled. Members must be taking the opportunity to have a new start with the new month.

       

        We had visitors from Kathmandu, the past Disrict Governor Ratna Sakyaman & Ann Chandra who sent his warm greetings from his country.

He was brought by our PDG Leslie Salehuddin, a Rotary classmate of his.

We were informed that in his country, Rotary has a big following and the projects that they do are significant in the eyes of the people.

The speaker for the day was from First Lead Investments Consultants Limited, the CEO Alice Chow and her accomplice Mark Wils to talk on property investments in Perth, Australia. Mark spoke first about catching the property boom wave now,  followed by Alice who spoke about borrowing to buy property and letting the rental income cover the loan with extra cash flow.

It was an interesting talk with many questions after.

The meeting ended slightly after 2.00 pm.

Report of Meeting Thursday 25 October 12

          It was the time of the year again when we get inspired for another year with the visit from the District Governor; Mansoor Saad with his Assistant Governor

         

The main topic at the assembly was on the change of venue for our meetings among other usual things that were reported.

         

This was followed by dinner at 7.30 pm.

At 8.00 pm we started the club meeting. The DG spoke of the Rotary Strategic Plan of the three parts;

1.) Vision Statement

2.) Strategic Thrust

3.) Core Values

He reminded us of 1905 when Rotary was born under not so rosy circumstances in Chicago, in the midst of crime and poverty. But yet something good and noble can be relevant and sustainable to this day.

 What will Rotary be in another 100 years from now? He informed that 30% of the clubs less than 50 members around the world are weak and it is the duty Rotary to strengthen such clubs in the strategic thrust.

He then spoke of a vision statement that every President is to have one. As for him, his would be on a broader base based on the following three parts;

1.) To strengthen clubs – reduce drop-out rates, inspire interesting projects.

2.) Humanitarian service – fruitful projects that people can relate to.

3.) Enhance Public Relations – advertise projects that Rotary is trustworthy and good. And to tell the world that we need their support.

He stressed on core values to supplement the four (4) way test.

1.) Service – to be hands-on and be involved

2.) Fellowship – to have good fellowship so that we could synergise for  

     service                  

3.) Diversity – in international service, women in Rotary and other races in

     the country in Rotary.

4.) Integrity

5.) Leadership – with a vision plan

          The meeting ended with a short question and answer session with the DG.

          This was followed by a vocational service award to Manakum for service to the Sentul Community.

          The night ended shortly after with presentation of momentoes to the DG and his wife.

     

Meeting on 16 August 12

The meeting started with the ring of the bell at 1.15pm. this time there was no royal toast for the last time this year in view that that it was the last week of Ramadan.
This was followed by the introduction of our guests for the day; a group of three from the Rotary Club of Bandar Utama which included our speaker; they were Lin Lin , _____ and Janice Lim.

The President informed that the CCC tentative dates and venue, Sat 13 & Sunday 14 October 12 at Sunway Giza.

PDG Leslie introduced the speaker for the day, PP Janice Lim who has scaled the base camp of Mount Everest.  She is  involved in Rotary at the District level with iconic projects such as the Dream Music Centre and  in the preparation of the District handbook and is in the district PR committee.

She showed some spectacular slides of her expedition to the base camp of Mount Everest, last 30 March 2012. There were 14 of them on a 13 day trip. All of them made it to the base camp except for a doctor that had to be air lifted out due to altitude sickness.

The secret of their success was to trek up at their pace and not to rush up the treks. Other priceless tips for a trip of this nature was to bring can food such as sardines, sambal and Kimchi. Also to purchase those cold weather clothing a t Kathmandu where they are about 10% the price of what one would get here in Malaysia.Another tip was to get sufficient sleep food and drink even if one did not feel like eating.

They had to bear with the bare necessities: some of whom did not shower for 13 days. Lavatories were a luxury. There was no electricity , however certain places had solar power.

Why did they do it?
It was a thrill of adventure, of self discovery, of endurance, a test of their determination, of facing challenges and they came back all the more powerful.

Her next expedition - Lajing , China. Anyone Game?

The meeting ended shortly after her presentation and PDG Kok Beng, presented PP Janice Lim with a token  of appreciation.


The Charity Foundation Annual General Meeting was held after the close of the meeting by President Keng Mun.

Meeting on the 10 of May 2012

Club Meeting on the 10 of May 2012

The meeting begun with the ring of the bell at 1.25pm, this was followed by the royal toast by President Joyce. There were fewer of us at the meeting today as many were at the RI convention at Bangkok and were not back from the trip.

Hon Secretary Jim Poh announced the Board of Directors and Chair meeting to be held at the Bunga Raya Restaurant, the Royal Lake Club on Monday 14 May 2012 at 6.30pm. He also reminded members of the Installation Night on Saturday 14 July 2012 at the new studio banquet hall at Renaissance Hotel. He also announced the he will be volunteering members to play their part in the installation dinner being the incoming Vice President.

President Joyce announced that there would be no meeting next Thursday 17 May 12 as the meeting has been replaced with the Friday 18 May 12 TRF might at Bukit Jalil.

There was no speaker for the day but our IYE Emel volunteered to speak of his experience so far in Malaysia. He has stayed with several families and has gone to different schools. He is quite at home with his present school where he found the majority of his friends to be Malay. He walks or bikes to school from where he is staying.

He spoke of his experience in Sarawak and his visit to the long house in the interior, where they donated fire extinguishers to the inhabitants. He is in his final stage of stay in Malaysia and the members saw a different Emel with his hair dyed black from his original blond. This was good for him, so that he could ‘ponteng sekolah’ (play truant) easier being one with the local crowd.

David gave a short story of his experience in Nigeria. PP Robert Ng gave account of his shortest ever insurance payout that took 3 days after the incident. The incident happened on Sunday and the pay out by the insurance company was made on Tuesday.

The meeting adjourned at 1.52pm by President Joyce.

Meeting on the 3 of May 2012

RC Gombak Meeting on 3 May 12

Meeting started with the ring of the bell and the royal toast as usual at 1.15pm by President Joyce Lim.                                                          

This was followed by announcements by President Joyce. She informed that the Thursday meeting on 17 May 12 shall be replaced by the TRF dinner at Bukit Jalil on Friday 18 May 12.

Each participant shall have to top up RM20 for the dinner. Guest would have to pay RM60 .

Board of Directors meeting shall be at 6.30pm Monday 14 May 12 at the Bunga Raya Restaurant, the Royal Lake Club.

PP Jeff Hoh introduced the speaker for the day, Dr. Yeo who was here to speak on snoring.

He gave an interesting talk on snoring accompanied with different variety of snoring sounds depending on which part of air track was constricted. He also informed the various solutions to snoring.

He began his talk on long term effects on snoring, that could lead to heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, insomnia. He explained that first few hours (4hours) of sleep is known as NREM

restful sleep followed by the 2^nd part of REM Sleep where the heart

beat becomes faster and when we dream.

Sleep has this pattern of NREM and REM and is to be continuous. Snoring interrupts this sleep as the airways are constricted and carbon dioxide builds up that is when we wake up.

One thing for sure from this talk I understood the miracle of sleeping. Sleep is a need and assures us of good health as the good doctor said we can do away with food for a week but certainly will not be able to do away with sleep for a week.

The meeting ended with many questions and David (our newest member) had a few words of thanks for the speaker.

The meeting closed at 2:00 pm.

Meeting on 26 April 2012

The meeting began with the ring of the bell and the royal toast. There were announcements to begin with The Board of Director's meeting to be held on the 14 of May 2012 at 6.30pm at the the Bunga Raya Restaurant, Royal Lake Club. The President announced that there would be two more cheque presentations to Assunta Charity Home and Rumah Caris. She also announced the on coming RI Bangkok Convention from the 6 to the 9 of May 2012. Our President Elect announced the coming Installation Night to be on the Saturday14 of July 2012 at the Renaissance Hotel. The Rotary Club of Tanglin, our sister club of Singapore shall be holding their installation on Thursday the 19 of July 2012.

Our newest member Rtn Peter Arhebamen was presented the TRF award at the meeting.

This was followed by an interesting classification talk by our newest member Rtn David Rainton on his sojourn in Nigeria in the 70's. He recalled his adventure at gunpoint, where he was brought into an outpost to meet the officer-in-charge, only to find that they were requested to purchase raffle tickets. They bought all the tickets and were escorted back to their vehicle but were stopped abruptly and had to return at gunpoint to the post. This time they thought that they were in for it.!! The officer then told them that they had not written their addresses on the tickets, in case any of them should win the raffle.They had a lot of writing to do after buying all the tickets.

The meeting ended shortly after with the President closing the meeting.
